Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is one of the vital fields in Pharmacy curriculum. The department has necessary faculty members who are experts in areas like Synthesis of medicinal compounds, structural elucidation of medicinal substances and analysis of drug and its components. The department is actively involved in teaching of pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis on industrial perspective. The department provides training to students by conducting workshops and seminars.
Pharmaceutical chemistry involves the use of laboratory methods to determine the composition of samples qualitatively, semi quantitatively and quantitatively. Students get an exposure to monitor the presence or absence of chemical moiety in given sample. Semi quantitative analysis allows the students to compare the amount of substance in each sample with a reference standard.
Drug discovery and optimization in pharmaceutical industry are extensively carried out with combinatorial chemistry with High Throughput Screening methods. Theoretical and practical knowledge in chemistry helps to understand the physical and chemical properties of solids that can ensure a better selection of formulation. Other related areas in pharmaceutical chemistry include new drug development, Computer Aided Drug Design, Molecular Modelling, Structure Activity Relationship studies, in-vitro, in-vivo screening of chemical moieties.
Pharmaceutical analysis comes under this department. Quality Control department is the most important and integral part of Multi National Companies. It involves the qualitative and quantitative analysis of formulations from raw materials to finished products. Quality control were done by both instrumental and non instrumental techniques. Students get hands on experience on instruments such as UV spectroscopy, calorimeter, fluorometer, nepheloturbidometer, etc.
